Liturgy and Life

Liturgy reflects the realities of the world and is impacted by cultural values

Deliberate choices must be made for liturgies to reflect the values of God’s kingdom: A place at the table for all

  • Everyone has access
  • All have a voice
  • Everyone is equal and welcome
  • The poor and marginalized have a place of preference

Our Liturgy reflects the values of the first disciples

  • We share our experiences of Jesus
  • The scriptures bring light and truth to our experience because they are our stories
  • We listen to the Holy Spirit through guidance of Church leaders and our tradition
  • We share fellowship with one another
  • Our way of being together must always be just

Vatican II asks that our liturgies

  • Involve full, active, and conscious participation of the assembled
  • Illumine the four-fold presence of the risen Christ
  • Express how Christ is present in our lives
  • Reveal that lived faith to others
  • Manifest the Paschal Mystery
  • Build up the people to a full expression of the Spirit of Christ
  • Help the people to preach Christ
  • Gather the community, especially the marginalized, into one Body in Christ
  • Send Forth the community to live as Christ in the world

Our call as ministers and liturgy preparers is to make liturgies

  • Relevant
  • Focused on the margins of society
  • Proclaim justice as constitutive of the Gospel
  • Educate
  • Inspire
  • Evangelize
  • Reflect the values of our families
  • Transform us into Christ’s presence in the world
  • Build welcoming and inclusive communities where faith does justice
