Catholic Alaskan Native Ministry

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Alaska Native Ministry desk is to be a

  • COLLABORATIVE AGENT between the Archbishop of Anchorage and the Catholic Native Community;
  • to EMPOWER Native Leadership in roles of Worship, Evangelization, Justice, Life, Peace, and Cultural Preservation.

Our Native people are involved in the following ministries:

  • extraordinary ministers to the sick at Alaska Native Medical Center
  • provide a weekyl Liturgy of the Word with Communion on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. at the Native Medical Center
  • prepare the monthly Native Mass hosted by Saint Anthony parish, 3rd Saturday of the month at 5:30 p.m. followed by a social potluck
  • Morning Star Kateri Circle which meets every Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Holy Family Cathedral Education Center; the elders have a potluck, share stories and intentions and pray together; they also make it a point to attend memorial services and funerals for our Native people
  • Evening Star Kateri Circle meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Cathedral Education Center; this group plans the various liturgies, socials, and fund raisers. The funds are used to help our membership attend the Tekakwitha Conference held annually in the lower 48.
  • Local Organizing Ministry (peace and justice) established through Pacific Institute for Local Organizing; we belong to the AFA--CT federation of 12 congregations: Anchorage Faith in Action—Congregations Together; we work with the Native Lutheran Congregation on social issues impacting the Native community in Anchorage; through this organization our people develop relationships, learn leadership skills, and are empowered to meet and negotiate with local political officials.
  • the people’s stewardship involves them in Eucharist ministry, lectoring, hospitality, prayer groups, music ministry, and religious formation programs within the parishes of the Archdiocese.
  • an Elders Council comes together quarterly to share concerns and joys with our Archbishop helping to give vision and direction to the Native Ministry desk

Annually we participate in:

  • Preparation for the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention liturgy, which takes place in October. We sponsor a mass for the delegates at Holy Family Cathedral. The bishop from Juneau, Fairbanks, and the Archbishop of Anchorage concelebrate this event. Our Native people from every part of the state attend this convention and are invited to pray for the delegates and their deliberations to show our solidarity. After the liturgy there is a potluck in the Cathedral parish hall. We have had as many as 300 people attend.
  • Celebrating the feast of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha on July 14th; we come together to celebrate at Holy Family Cathedral to honor our Native sister so honored with the title of Blessed for the holiness of her life and the example she has given to her native brothers and sisters who seek to emulate her.
  • The Tekakwitha Conference held annually at the end of July; we send those interested in furthering their religious and spiritual formation; this is a great gathering of the Catholic Native peoples of America celebrating Native culture and faith.

Our Native Catholic population includes Yupik, Chupik, Inupiaq, Inuit, Aleut, and Athabascan Indians in the Anchorage Bowl and outlying cities and villages.
