Anchorage Faith and Action: Congregations Together (AFACT)

In January 2003, with local grants from the Archdiocese of Anchorage CCHD, five pastors and one parish leader from three denominations attended training with PICO, A National of Faith-Based Community Organizations.  AFACT (formerly the Anchorage Interdenominational Sponsoring Committee) was formed when those pastors and other ministers from six denominations were invited by Archbishop Roger L. Schwietz, O.M.I. to a presentation on congregation-based community organizing by PICO.  Ministers from 13 congregations were present and one month later they formalized a sponsoring committee that would learn the PICO model of organizing, reach out to more congregations, raise a budget, and hire a director to supervise and coordinate the organizing process.

Central to the organization's purpose is the training and development of leaders in congregations who will:

  • visit the families in their congregations and the community to identify those issues most pressing for Anchorage's low- and moderate-income population
  • conduct research and meetings on identified issues
  • learn how local government works, and
  • build relationships with local officials in order to effect institutional change.

Using a model developed by PICO, AFACT is acting to effect change on local issues that impact the health of the community, including health care access, housing, crime, neighborhood revitalization, and youth recreation.  Twenty-eight pastors and lay leaders have attended PICO’s national leadership training.  AFACT members include:

  • Alaska Native Lutheran Church
  • Amazing Grace Lutheran Church
  • Catholic Alaska Native Ministry
  • Central Lutheran Church
  • First CME Church
  • Gloria De Lutheran Church
  • Good Shepherd Baptist Mission
  • Holy Family Cathedral (Catholic)
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church
  • St. Anthony Catholic Church
  • St. Mark Lutheran Church
Leaders from these congregations are coming together across denominational and race differences to discover together the benefits of congregation-based community organizing.  For further information contact Angela Liston, angela.liston@caa-ak.org.
