September 2-5 │ SERRA International Annual Convention - The Theme: Bringing the Bread of Life-True Manna in the Wilderness. All masses are open to any Catholic who wishes to attend. Schedule will be posted soon. General sessions will be $45 per day.

August 31 │Proposed changes in the Mass The Archbishop has approved this class as a part of the catechesis on the upcoming changes in the Liturgy. Summer class by Deacon Bill at Holy Cross Parish - 7 pm - For questions, call Janine Redding, 349-8388.

September 27 │ Church History - A review of church history will begin at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish the last Monday of September, 6:30-8pm for 8 sessions. Each meeting will consist of two videos with a short discussion after each, facilitated by Sr. Lorene Griffin and Vince Fennimore. Please give prayerful consideration to taking advantage of this opportunity to deepen your understanding and appreciation of our rich faith tradition.

We are studying and discussion Pope John Paul II's teachings on the Theology of the Body, using the book Sex and the Sacred City. This week's topic = Family Life. No preparation is necessary. September 28-December 7 │Introduction to the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament: Survey of representative segments of the Hebrew Bible. September 29-December 8 │American Catholicism: Redesigned to focus on distinctive features, practices and personalities American Catholicism since 1950. Part time Parish Volunteer Coordinator (PVC)- Catholic Social Services is recruiting for a part-time Parish Volunteer Coordinator (PVC) to work with newly arriving refugees resettled by the Refugee Assistance & Immigration Services program. The PVC will create an organizational structure to strengthen Parish commitment to refugee resettlement and focus on securing winter clothing, independent transportation training and community social support. September 10-12 │12 Step Retreat: Living in the Solution through Forgiveness and Reconciliation. The retreat will be based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. This retreat is open to anyone interested in recovery from alcoholism and other addictions through the spirituality of the 12 Steps. The retreat will consist of conferences, prayer & reflection, group sharing, and time for individual conferences with Fr. Dick Dunphy, SJ. Fr. Dick has been in recovery for over thirty-five years. He currently is on the staff of Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Colorado, where he gives spiritual direction and guides retreats, including 12 Step retreats. He holds a doctorate in theology and has specialized in spirituality. He has served as a faculty member, administrator and chaplain at Jesuit universities in St. Louis, Rome, and Denver. October 14-17 │Father Bernie Owens, SJ is directing a contemplative weekend Retreat with Conferences/Talks, Meditations in Common and Eucharist. The retreat begins on Thursday, 7:00pm and concludes Sunday, 12 Noon. We encourage those interested in making the retreat to begin on Thursday. Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ, was ordained in 1972, earned his doctorate in Christian Spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA in 1983, taught at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1981 to 1994. Coming to Manresa in 1994, he has been Director of the two-year Internship in Ignatian Spirituality, has led an annual seminar in Christian Spiritual Classics, and guided retreatants through the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola.

September 11-12 │ Worldwide Marriage Encounter -Living life in Community Mirrors our Couple Relationships. Worldwide Marriage Encounter will host the Enrichment “Building Community Through Relationship” on September 11-12 in Anchorage at Our lady of Guadalupe. Tom and Kathy Dauer of Spokane, Washington will present this enrichment. All who have ever attended a Worldwide Marriage Encounter, Retrouvaille or EE weekend are invited. The Enrichment is a day and a half experience with no overnight stay. This enrichment is for any new or previously encountered couples/priests/religious looking for a greater sense of Community with others who also share the desire for stronger marriages and more enriching support communities. September 24-26 │ Camp Erin Anchorage 2010 is now accepting Camper Applications for this year’s camp to be held Friday, September 24 – Sunday, September 26, 2010. The camp will be held at the Cub Scout Camp location in Chugiak (Camp Carlquist). Camp Erin Anchorage is our annual weekend grief camp for children ages 6 – 17 years who have lost someone close to them to death. Hospice of Anchorage’s Forget Me Not Grief Program has partnered with The Moyer Foundation to offer Camp Erin to our community for a ten-year commitment. The Moyer Foundation partners with healthcare and bereavement organizations in local communities to help fund, manage, and grow Camp Erin nationwide. For more information on Camp Erins across the country, please visit www.moyerfoundation.org. Last September, 2009, we had our first Camp Erin and it was wonderful. The camp experience is filled with traditional camp fun as well as grief activities, education and emotional support- led by grief professionals and trained volunteers. Camp Erin provides a unique opportunity for a peer bonding between children and teens facing a similar life circumstance. The camp weekend is offered free to all families. (This does not include travel costs.) In addition, we will always provide grief education and a camp review to the adult caregivers of Camp Erin campers prior to camp wrap-up on Sunday, September 26th.
