Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time [October 4, 2009]

October │ The SALT (Scripture and Leadership Training) program is a non-credit certificate program offered through the Archdiocese of Anchorage in a cooperative agreement with the School of Theology and Ministry of Seattle University. It offers participants the opportunity to connect Scripture to their life through reflection and prayer in the context of an adult learning community. October 3 - 4 │ WYD Spaghetti Feed Fund-Raiser: Holy Cross youth will be serving up hot plates of spaghetti with your choice of two different types of sauces. Along with garlic bread and salad. Price is $6.50 a plate for adults, $3.50 a plate for a child, and a Family of 4 Meal is $20.00. Come on by and enjoy a plate of pasta after the 6:00pm Mass on Saturday and again after at the 11:00am Mass on Sunday.

October 4│The annual celebration of the “Red Mass” for lawyers, judges, and politicians will be on Sunday, October 4 at 9:30 am at Holy Family Cathedral (Fifth Avenue and H Street, Anchorage). Archbishop Roger L. Schwietz, OMI will be the presider. The Mass is one of the activities of the St. Thomas More Lawyers Society of Alaska. There will be a brunch at 11:00 am following the Mass at the Marriott Hotel Downtown along with guest speaker, Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan and a panel discussion regarding St. Thomas More’s final words: “I am the King’s good servant, but God’s first,” and how this applies to the work of lawyers and politicians and their faith in today’s world. September 12 │ Escape from Anchorage – Reserve this weekend: we’re escaping Anchorage to Soldotna before the snow flies for some weekend fun and R&R, including hiking. Details to follow.

September 20 │You are invited to a “Come and See” meeting outlining the national program JustFaith. This 30-week formation group is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a spiritual journey into compassion, to understand better our call to social justice. Boisclair, Ph.D. This very popular course explores women’s stories, female images, and teachings pertaining to women in the Christian Bible and consider what they suggest pertaining to women in the contemporary church. Boisclair, Ph.D. Catholic Theology III will explore the fundamental Catholic understanding of moral theology including Catholic Social Teaching, the moral implications of ecology and overview of the sacraments of healing. September 11-13│12 Step Retreat: Attitude of Gratitude The retreat will be based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. This retreat is open to anyone interested in recovery from alcoholism and other addictions through the spirituality of the 12 Steps. The retreat will consist of conferences, prayer & reflection, group sharing, and time for individual conferences with Fr. Dick Dunphy, SJ. Fr. Dick has been in recovery for over thirty-five years. He currently is on the staff of Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Colorado, where he gives spiritual direction and guides retreats, including 12 Step retreats. He holds a doctorate in theology and has specialized in spirituality. He has served as a faculty member, administrator and chaplain at Jesuit universities in St. Louis, Rome, and Denver. He also has counseled people living with and affected by HIV, worked with the homeless and chemically dependent, and served as the founding director of Regis University's Institute on the Common Good. September 25 – 27│ Koinonia Retreat "Koinonia" is the greek word for Community. This weekend retreat program is for adults, concentrating on the Pascal Mystery: the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. There will be a series of talks, discussions, and activities which foster renewal and give participants a real knowledge and experience of what it means to be Church.
