First Sunday of Lent [March 1, 2009]

March 8 │ “At the Death House Door” a documentary told through the eyes of Reverend Carroll Pickett, who from 1982 to 1995 ministered 95 inmates in the final hours, will be shown at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish at 1:30 pm. A discussion with Rev. Pickett will follow. This film was short-listed for an Academy Award this year. This is in conjunction with Alaskans Against the Death Penalty. All are invited.

This retreat will be led by Bernie Owens, S.J. Fr. Bernie has a doctorate in Christian Spirituality and taught for 13 years at the University of Detroit. Since 1994, he has been the director of the Internship in Ignatian Spirituality out of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield, MI. During this extended weekend beginning Thursday evening, Fr. Bernie will lead participants through the 8 beatitudes as guides for how we are to be as Christians. February 5 - April 23 │ Paul’s Life and Letters (Thursdays, Feb 5-April 23 in Grant Hall 231 at APU, 7:00 - 9:20pm) This course compares and contrasts Luke’s portrait of Paul with what can be learned about Paul from his letters. It fosters a detailed reading of his letters and explores how Paul’s experience of the Risen Christ shaped his understanding of Jesus’ universal significance. Participants will discuss how Paul’s understandings continue to shape Christian teachings. Interested adults are welcome to take these courses as “Newman Observers”. February 20 │Let the good times roll! Lumen Christi High School's 14th annual Gala celebrates Mardi Gras this year with dinner, live and silent auctions, and Mardi Gras fun at 6 pm Friday, Feb. 20 at the Egan Center. New Orleans-inspired food, beads, masks and entertainment highlight the fundraiser for the Anchorage archdiocese's Catholic high school. Auction items include fishing trips, bear-viewing at Katmai, fine art, fine jewelry, a trip on the haul road, tickets to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and many other items large and small. February 22 │A YOUTH MASS and HUNGER BANQUET - We invite all youth of every parish in the Archdiocese to participate. You are invited to be ministers of the Word, ministers of the Eucharist, Altar Servers, music ministers, ushers/hospitality/gift bearers, etc. We also ask for you assistance in implementing and leading the Hunger Banquet which will be after the mass, downstairs in our parish hall. At the very least, we hope that you will attend and help demonstrate that youth do take responsibility to grow in their faith and are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and commitment to our Catholic Social Teaching. February 25 │THEOLOGY AND BREW FOR FEBRUARY - Join us for a very special Theology & Brew on Ash Wednesday, February 25th as we discuss and explore how God works in the depths of our heart and soul to purify and transform us. Fr. Bernie Owens, SJ will share how God is actively working in our lives as we move beyond the more obvious conversion of behaviors to a more radical conversion of our hearts. Bernie will lead participants through the 8 beatitudes as guides for how we are to be as Christians.
