August 26-September 18 │The Gospel of Mark (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 - 9:30 PM) Regina Boisclair Ph.D., Professor. This course will engage in a critical analysis and peculiar features of Mark’s good news of Jesus, Son of God. Special concern will be given to differences between Mark’s social location and that of his 21st century readers.
August 25-September 22 │Foundations of Hinduism (Mondays and Thursdays at 7:00 - 9:20 PM) Alfred Collins, Ph.D., Professor. Hinduism might be described as a quest to attain the real self and overcome attachment to a false or unreal sense of self. This course will explore the pathways this search has taken over the past 3500 years.

September 11 │ Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath - APU’s Cardinal Newman Chair and Interfaith Council of Anchorage are sponsoring the Alaska premiere of the film Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath on September 11, 2008, at 2:00 PM in Carr-Gottstein 102 and at 7:00 PM in the Consortium Library Room 307. - Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath is the first feature-length documentary film to analyze the aftermath of 9/11 on South Asian and Arab Americans. The film explores race, religion, and national identity. A panel of Americans with various backgrounds will respond to the film and questions from the audience. September 12 & 13│KENAI: Generations of Faith : Lifelong Faith Formation for the Whole Parish Community This Workshop led by Leif Kehrwald from the Center for Ministry Development will introduce participants to the vision and practices of lifelong, intergenerational faith formation, guide the development and implementing of lifelong curriculum for the whole parish community, teach parish leadership skills for facilitating intergenerational learning and will provide planning resources. The workshops will be held from 9:00am - 3:30pm (both Friday & Saturday), Cost for this training is $100.00 per person. Lodging is available at the Tanglewood B&B at $50.00 per night. September 14│Consecration of New Altar: Holy Cross Church - Archbishop Roger Schwietz will consecrate the new altar at Holy Cross during the 11:00 am Mass, all are welcome to attend.

September 19│European American Folk Mass (POLKA MASS) - Friday Sept. 19th at Saint Patrick Church - 7:00 pm. People of Polish, German and Czeck heritages will be praying in their musical idiom. National Clothing encouraged. A collection will be taken for the St. Patrick Senior Projects. The 3rd Friday Knights of Columbus Polka Dance will follow in the Parish Hall. All are invited.

September 27th│The Honorable Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit will speak on “The Curious Case of Free Exercise,” Religious Freedom and the First Amendment, Saturday, September 27, 2008, 3:00pm Z.J. Loussac Public Library, Wilda Marston Theatre a reception will follow in the Ann Stevens Room - the Public is Invited.

September 28th │Celebration of the Red Mass, Archbishop Roger L. Schwietz, OMI presiding 9:30 am Mass, Holy Family Cathedral Judges are invited to wear their judicial robes and join in the procession.

September 28th│Brunch Presentation - The Honorable Judge Diarmuid F. October 3rd, 7th & 10th│ Marriage Information Nights : Archdiocese of Anchorage Family Life Ministries will present several opportunities for anyone interested in finding out more about what it means to be married in the Catholic Church. Representatives form Engage Encounter, World Wide Marrriage Encounter, Natural Family Planning and Retrouvaille, along with local priests will be available to answer questions. Fr. Thomas Brundage the Archdiocesan Judicial Vicar and Fr. James Oberle the Director of the Office of Evangelization & Worship will be among the presenters at these presentations. September 6│Saturday Sacrament Series: Baptism & Confirmation - This four course series will begin Saturday, September 6th from 9:00 am to Noon at Holy Spirit Center. Each month through December we will focus on a specific Sacrament (or two) reflecting on the history, validity, preparation and spirituality of the Sacraments. With the newly released Sacramental & Catechetical Guidelines for the Archdiocese of Anchorage this is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to review these wonderful gifts that bring God present in our lives. September 26 - September 28 The Spiritual Solution of the 12 Steps - This retreat will be led by Dick Dunphy, S.J. and Alison King, MS, MAC and co-sponsored by the Providence Breakthrough Program. Based on the 12 Steps, there will be a special emphasis on the way in which they present us with a spiritual solution to addiction. The weekend will have conferences, quiet time for reflection and rest, sharing, and the opportunity to participate in 12 Step meetings. October 3-5│ Koinonia weekend A spiritual renewal weekend called “Koinonia” (which means community) will be offered at Holy Spirit Center beginning Friday, October 3 at 6pm (check-in) and ending Sunday, October 5 at 4pm. Various meditations include the call to holiness, scripture, prayer, Church, the people of God, Forgiveness, sacraments, God is love, etc. Archbishop Schweitz and Fr. Please join Catholic Social Services for Expressions of Refugee Youth Photography Exhibit at the next First Friday on September 5, 2008 from 6-8 p.m. at the Downtown Starbucks, 601 W. 5th Avenue. The photographs were inspired by 12 young artist’s impressions and reflections of themselves, their communities and their families.
