The Akathistos celebrates and explains the Virgins role in the mystery of the Incarnation. However, as the Thanksgiving Hymn to the Blessed Mother, it was celebrated after the miraculous deliverance of Constantinople from a siege in 626 AD. This service soon became the hymn of thanksgiving for Mary’s heavenly intercession and help and was assigned liturgically to the 5th Saturday of Lent called Akathistos Saturday. This service is held only once a year and lasts approximately 1 hour.
