December 2│“What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam” - In response to feedback from previous events in the Engaging Muslims: Religion, Cultures, Politics, Dr. Regina Boisclair, Cardinal Newman Chair of Theology at Alaska Pacific University and members of the Islamic Community Center of Anchorage Alaska will offer a two-part program, “What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam” on December 2, 2007 2:00-4:30 p.m. in the first floor Wilda Marston Theater of the Z. J. Loussac Public Library. Part One (2:00-3:00 p.m.) will consists of presentations concerning the Foundational Beliefs, Practices and Understandings of Islam. Part Two (3:15-4:30p.m.) will consist of a panel to answer questions from the audience. This program is part of Engaging Muslims: Religion, Cultures, Politics, a community education program sponsored by the Cardinal Newman Chair to promote dialogue and understanding in the Anchorage community.

December 10│Town Hall Meeting with Archbishop Schwietz and Erniestine Fleece, Region 12 Lay Representative to the USCCB Discussion will take place around the events of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops November Meeting. The gathering will take place at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (3900 Wisconsin Street, Anchorage) from 7:00 - 9:00pm

December 10 |Candlelight Mass of Remembrance - The Ministry of Bereavement of St. Patrick’s located at 2111 Muldoon Road will be holding a candle lighting ceremony and Mass Monday, December 10th, beginning at 6:45pm with a musical prelude. It will be a Mass to honor the loved ones we have lost-whether it is a family member or a friend. We could also keep in mind the men and women of the armed forces who have died so that we can freely express our faith. The holidays, especially Christmas, can be a particularly difficult time of the year for those of us who have lost a loved one. The candle lighting ceremony is a symbol of love, of life, and hope - Refreshments will be served in the gathering area after the service. Please come join us.

Catholic Social Services is helping with the Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing project to provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal to low-income families. Fr Michael Shields will offer this conference Friday, November 9 at St. Patrick’s Parish from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Men of all ages are welcome.

November 10 | (for women Only) “Women, the Masterpiece of God,” again, using the material from Pope John Paul II’s teaching on human sexuality “Theology of the Body” and from Christopher West, a layman who has popularized the Holy Father’s teaching. Fr Michael Shields will offer this conference Saturday, November 10 at St. Patrick’s Parish from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Prayers for healing will be offered during the conference. November 12 | “How Do We Share the Good News of Jesus Christ?” Part two of Fr. Michael Shield’s two part series will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 12th, at St. Patrick’s Parish. The gift received is the gift given away. This talk will focus not only on the “whys” of sharing your faith but also the “hows.” All too often we hear talks on why we should share our faith -- but not on how we can do it. This talk will equip you to be a faith sharer and will surprise you as to how easy it is and how you might even be doing it without knowing it.

November 15│Covenant House Alaska’s annual Candlelight Vigil to bring awareness to our homeless and at-risk youth will be held in Town Square (6th & F) on Thursday, November 15th from 6-7 p.m. Please come with your friends and family to show your support and encouragement to Anchorage’s homeless youth. Gloves, hats and socks will be collected to help them keep warm this winter. After the Vigil, stop by the Crisis Center adjacent to Town Square for an open house with hot chocolate and cookies. The Teen Homes at Catholic Social Services (McAuley Manor & Charlie Elder House) help kids learn life skills. An important part of the curriculum for residents is learning to cook. Catholic Social Services is in need of financial or food donations for the Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing project. Food items that are needed include canned veggies (including yams and cranberry sauce), gravy mix, pumpkin pies, rolls, and stuffing mix. Items can be dropped off at 3710 East 20th Avenue. We also need volunteers to help organize and distribute food on the afternoon and evening of November 19th at St. Patrick's Church.
