ANCHORAGE THANKSGIVING BLESSING | Food items needed for the Anchorage Thanksgiving Blessing. In addition to any regular food pantry items you donate, please consider donating the following ingredients to help provide a Thanksgiving meal to those in need: cranberry sauce, gravy mix, canned vegetables, canned sweet potatoes or yams, stuffing mix, aluminum roasting pans. This effort is part of a city-wide collaborative project with 8 sites throughout the municipality on Monday, November 20th. For information on how you can help distribute food, please contact Melissa at 297-7706.

GIFT HOLIDAY OUTREACH PROGRAM: Catholic Social Services (CSS) has been active with the GIFT Holiday Outreach project for many years. The city-wide Holiday event providing toys to children (up to 14 years of age) and a holiday meal for the entire family takes place from December 18 – December 22, 2006 at the ACS Warehouse, 600 Telephone Drive. CSS needs volunteers from 5:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. during “GIFT” week. Please contact Melissa Bartley at 297-7706 or melissa.bartley@cssalaska.org for more information.

THE ADVENT CHRISTMAS TOY COLLECTION: The Advent Christmas Toy Collection starts Sunday, December 3, 2006. Please bring an unwrapped gift item to church during Advent for a child in need. Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) – In his first encyclical, God Is Love, Pope Benedict XVI stated that “within the community of believers there can never be room for a poverty that denies anyone what is needed for a dignified life” (no. 20). In our own country, 37 million Americans struggle in poverty, many despite working full-time. Within our community of believers we do make a difference – when we support the work of CCHD. CCHD is committed to helping people create permanent solutions to the problem of poverty in their community. You can help break the cycle of poverty. SALT is offered by the Office of Evangelization and Worship of the Archdiocese of Anchorage. SALT provides a holistic course of Catholic study integrating Scripture, spirituality and leadership training.

Catholic Social Services’ Charlie Elder House is looking for volunteers to teach piano lessons to teenage boys. The program helps homeless and troubled teenage boys learn to live independently, achieve academic success and maintain positive relationships. On-site piano. Flexible schedule.
