16th Sunday in Ordinary Time [July 24-30, 2006]

BREAKING NEWS: SEOUL, South Korea, JULY 17, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The World Methodist Conference meeting in South Korea is expected to sign the joint declaration on justification signed in 1999 by the Catholic Church and the World Lutheran Federation. The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity made this announcement today in a communiqué sent to the Vatican press office.

The World Methodist Conference is being held in Seoul from July 20-24. Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, will attend.

The conference "is convoked at eight-year intervals and brings together Christians from all over the world that belong to Wesley's tradition," the dicastery's communiqué said.

The Methodist movement originated in England in the 18th century as a movement of spiritual, missionary and social renewal. Today it is present in close to 100 countries. John Wesley (1703-91), an Anglican priest founded the Methodists in England as a spiritual movement.

During this week's World Methodist Conference, the ceremony in which the 1999 declaration will be extended to include Methodists will take place in the course of the solemn celebration of the Word of God, in the presence of Cardinal Kasper and of Reverend Doctor Ishmael Noko, secretary general of the World Lutheran Federation.

The joint declaration, expressing a consensus between the Lutheran Federation and the Catholic Church on the doctrine of justification, was signed in Augsburg, Germany, October 1999. The doctrine of justification was a cause of Luther's Reformation.

At the end of last year, when Benedict XVI received a delegation of the World Methodist Council, led by its president, Bishop Sunday Mbang of Nigeria, the Holy Father mentioned the council's intention to also sign the joint declaration on the doctrine of justification. Should the World Methodist Council express its intention to associate itself to the joint declaration, it would contribute to the reconciliation that we ardently desire and would be a significant step toward the objective of full and visible unity in the faith, the Holy Father said at the time.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES

H.U.G.S.S. [Helping Us Give School Supplies] & Coats for Kids project needs volunteers. Distribution of school supplies and coats to children from low-income households will be held August 10 & 11, 2006. H.U.G.S.S., a collaborative community partnership, helps to prepare Anchorage kids for a successful school year by not only providing basic supplies, but also fosters a life-long excitement for learning. For more info call the HUGSS Hotline at 64-HUGSS (644-8477).

St. Francis House (SFH) collaborates with Anchorage’s Bishop’s Attic. SFH clients will soon have access to a greater selection of clothing and furniture through a new partnership between SFH and Bishop’s Attic. Effective immediately, clothing and furniture will be distributed at Bishop’s Attic through a voucher system. In addition to providing a better selection, this will allow SFH to expand its food pantry and fight hunger more aggressively. Please take all non-food donations directly to Bishop’s Attic at 1100 Gambell Street between the hours of 9am–5:30pm Monday thru Saturday. SFH can no longer accept non-food donations at their location.
