July 11 │ CUF Barbecue - It is time for the annual CUF barbecue and elections on Thursday, July 11 to elect the new board for the 2013-2014 year. If you are a member of CUF, St. Catherine of Siena Chapter, you are eligible to vote. If you have not had a chance to send in your dues for the year, please remit them to: P.O. July 13 │ Honor Our Lady of Mt Carmel - Saturday July 13th, a Day of Recollection to Honor Our Lady of Mt Carmel is open to the public. Father Dan Hebert will celebrate Mass at 9:30am at the Holy Spirit Center small chapel. Father Dan will give a talk at 11:00am until approximately 11:30am. From 11:30am to Noon there will be time for private prayer and reflection. At Noon there will be the Angelus followed by a potluck lunch until 1:30pm. There will be an opportunity for confession with Father Dan from 12:45pm to 2:45pm. There will be a time for the rosary, a litany to the Mother of God, group lectio divina and Evening Liturgy of the Hours. Events will finish at 4:00pm. There is no charge for this Day of Recollection. The Secular Discalced Carmelite "Our Lady of the Midnight Sun" Group of Anchorage enjoys sponsoring this annual event to the public. Please bring snacks to share, desserts to share and bring your favorite luncheon food to share with others. Free will offerings to support the Holy Spirit Center are encouraged. July 19-23 │Centering Prayer Retreat: This Centering Prayer Retreat can be taken in either a 3-day (Friday-Sunday) or 5-day (Friday-Tuesday) format. The retreat will be led by Fr. William Sheehan, OMI, who has been providing Centering Prayer retreats nationally for more than 25 years. With him will be Maru Ladron de Guevara, who has served many years with Fr. Thomas Keating. She has extensive experience nationally doing Centering Prayer retreats in Spanish. This is a silent retreat with communal Centering Prayer practice sessions, video sessions, a Taize Prayer Service and Lectio Divina. The retreat includes private rooms, solo quiet time and silent communal meals. Registration deadline Friday, July 12, 2013. According to the teacher, Alex Ippoliti, “We're focused on building reading proficiency and moderate comprehension of Ecclesiastical Latin, using the text "A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin" (http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Ecclesiastical-Latin-John-Collins/dp/081320667) by John Collins. This class will teach pronunciation and limited grammar and vocabulary. The target audience is people interested in participating more fully in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, or those simply looking to learn more about our Catholic heritage.”

This class will teach pronunciation and limited grammar and vocabulary. May 30 │ A Town Meeting on Immigration Reform: A listening session about the Catholic position on immigration reform and the reality of immigrants in Alaska will be hosted by Catholic Hispanic Organizing Ministry, a member of AFACT, on Thursday, May 30, 7:00-8:00pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Guests at the meeting will be Archbishop Roger Schwietz OMI and Senator Lisa Murkowski.
May 24-27 │Catholic Boy Scouts and their fathers have the opportunity to participate in the first-ever Fr. Capodanno Memorial Trek. The event will take place on Memorial Day weekend over Johnson Pass on the Kenai Peninsula. The Boys Scouts and fathers will spend 3 days and 2 nights backpacking over this scenic portion of the historic Iditarod Trail. The total route covers 23 miles, or about 8 miles per day, and has a modest 900 foot elevation gain. She has extensive experience nationally doing Centering Prayer retreats in Spanish. This is a silent retreat with communal Centering Prayer practice sessions, video sessions, a Taize Prayer Service and Lectio Divina. Tuesday │ Latin Class is held during St. Andrew’s Tuesday night Faith Formation at Gruening Middle School in Eagle River from 6:30 to 7:40pm. According to the teacher, Alex Ippoliti, “We're focused on building reading proficiency and moderate comprehension of Ecclesiastical Latin, using the text "A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin" (http://www.amazon.com/Primer-Ecclesiastical-Latin-John-Collins/dp/081320667) by John Collins. This class will teach pronunciation and limited grammar and vocabulary. The target audience is people interested in participating more fully in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, or those simply looking to learn more about our Catholic heritage.”
